Mad Props Challenge: Spoon

Sookie is killing me.  To review, the Mad Props Challenges so far have been, not necessarily in order (because I can’t remember), an umbrella, a paintbrush, a TV, a present, a hanger, a mirror, and now a spoon.   A spoon!  She is really making me stretch myself, which is absolutely why I’m doing this challenge.  I had a couple of spoons in my inventory, but none of them really jazzed me.  A little searching on the Marketplace produced a really fun prop from Masquerade.  I would give you a link to the store, but I never could find it.  I tried really, really hard and just never succeeded.  If anyone has a good lm, please do pass it along.

I set up the Story of Home skybox from Awesome Blossom and made myself a little kitchen with an old hunt gift (made by Onix Anthony of BalAni, which is a men’s clothing store).  By the time I had finished taking pics, I could imagine using this prop in so many ways:  an Alice in Wonderland scene, feeding a giant, even a Sci Fi set.  But I carried through where I was.  Here are a couple of poses out of the 6 the prop offers:

A couple of notes on some of the cute things in the shots.  The red waffle maker is from Reek.  The table and chairs are called “Dolce” and are from U&R Dogs.  The table rezzes plain, but when you touch it, it rezzes a fabulous dessert.  The cloud hanging on the wall, called “cumulonimbus,” is from Croire from the For the Love of Science hunt.  The large map hanging is one of a set of 3 “vintage maps” from Thistle.  Now, for the usual credits ….

No Pants SL

So Megs  sent me a link to this year’s No Pants event in New York.  I vaguely remember something about it from years past, but am so indebted to her for bringing me news of this year’s event.  Apparently, the official video for this year’s event won’t be ready until sometime next week, but you can review last year’s and see pics of this year’s here:  http://improveverywhere.com/.  This year’s event drew approximately 3500 people who went on the NY Subway pantsless, eventually converging on Union Station.

I decided that I needed to make my own little homage to the event.

Would I have done it in real life?  Probably not, but only because I am the coldest natured person on the planet.  Summertime?  I’m so there, though let me know at least a year out.  No better excuse for a diet and the gym!

Color Challenge: Sienna

Just when I thought I was caught up with all of my challenges, I realized that it was Saturday and Luna would have issued another color challenge.  I went to bed anyway, deciding to tackle it this morning.  Sienna proved an interesting color:  not quite brown, not really rust … somewhere in between.  I think I found something that works.  With the snow expected here this evening, it was fun to venture toward Summer for a few minutes.

The photo was taken at Mystico Ville, a beautiful and interesting place to wander.  Pose is from Diesel Works and here’s the rest ….

Mad Props Challenge: Hanger .. aka “Does my butt look big in these?”

The hanger challenge completely freaked me out.  And I’m still not sure that I nailed it.  But the mirror with hanger at LISP Bazaar (see Mirror post for link) inspired me.  So I threw it in an oooold skybox I have, used a pose from doll (Scarlett 01) and here we go ….

My story line here is that I’m trying on some pants I’ve just bought.  I’ve just taken them off the hanger and temporarily hung the hanger on the mirror.  The current evaluation is whether or not the pants make my butt look big.  Isn’t that always the question?  On this av?  Um, no.

Mad Props Challenge: Mirror

Wow, when I saw what the challenges were for the two weeks I had missed, mirror and hanger, I freaked a little.  These are definitely stretching challenges.  I decided to start with mirror, but as I am not as artistic as Sookie, who is issuing the challenges, making a mirror image of myself really wasn’t an option.  I also didn’t have a really usable mirror in my inventory.  Shopping it would have to be.  I wandered around a few of my favorite furniture / decorative stores and finally hit gold at LISP Bazaar.  Running late (surprise!) for my son’s (rl) hair appointment, I quickly grabbed a few things, knowing I could put something together later.  And I did ….  Here’s my result:

Creating a story for this photo, here’s what I think ….  My alt is tired of being an alt.  She’s just a mirror of my main, and all of these mirrors around her remind her of that, so she’s taken to drinking and finally just passed out.  Let’s hope she recovers soon.  OK, way too philosophical, I know.  But it was fun. 🙂  All of the mirrored pieces, including the wardrobe, came from LISP.  The bed is a hunt gift from La’Licious Designs.  The radiator drying rack is another hunt gift from Cheeky Pea.  The decal on the wall is from { what next }.  The booze and books are from the now closed SunnyM.  And the plant on top of the wardrobe was the Morning Sunshine hunt gift from Zoe’s Garden.  Finally, the skybox is the Dirty Linen skybox from the (also) now closed BamaLama.  All that’s left to say, really, is that the nightgown is so old I can’t say where it’s from as there’s no merchant info nor an LM in the folder.  Sorry. 😦

Color Challenge: Silver

Having done something exotic and sort of old world for the last color challenge (a whopping hour or so ago), I wanted to do something a little more modern this time.  Silver reminded me that I have a gorgeous ensemble in my inventory from Mimikri.  It’s leather and chic and looks amazing with my Stiletto Moody heels.  I wandered around the grid for a bit and decided I needed a car … something luxurious and sleek and really expensive looking.  I hit the showroom at Pro Street Cars and found a really elegant car with silver highlights called, appropriately, “Elegance.”  Doing my best interpretation of one of those models at car shows, using my Glitterati poses from this week’s Fifty Linden Friday, I got these shots …

This particular car is $1750L.  There are lots of other really nice cars in the showroom.  If you’re in the market, go check them out.

Color Challenge: Green

I’m behind on all of my challenges.  Christmas majorly got in the way and I spent a couple of weeks barely logging into SL.  Friends sent me emails reminding me that SL could send lost passwords and asking if my computer was still working.  Now that family has gone back to their respective states, everyone here has gone back to school, and I have (almost) caught up with myself, I think it’s time to get back to business.  So catching up with color challenges ….

The first one I need to do is green.  First, this kicked off an inventory clean, which was desperately needed.  I started at  just over 17k and am down to 16,604 atm.  I know that doesn’t sound like much progress, but I promise that it is.  That also included a land clear, so that’s essentially all of my inventory.  And most of it is now organized, which is huge.  17k may not seem like much to the fashionistas of SL, but let me say this:  the alt I’m running at the moment is only seven months old.  sigh ….

I came across this gorgeous dark green velvet coat outfit with hood from FallnAngel.  It was a Christmas gift and is lovely.  I put it on, rezzed the latest $10L skybox from A:S:S:, found a really nice green lounger from ORQUIDEA, and snapped a shot.  And then got called away by a friend to check out her latest build.  And then it was late and I slept on it.  So at 4 this morning, after my son came to bed having had a nightmare and his really, really bad breath forced me to get up, I sat down and rethought my shot.  The coat dress just didn’t fit with the feel of the lounger and skybox and was, in the end, too dark for the challenge.  So I hauled a kimono out of inventory, with just the barest hints of green here and there, and got back to it.  I’m really happy with the end result, which focuses on the green of the setting, instead of the clothes.

Color Challenge: Green

Backing out, here’s more of the skybox, showing off the beautiful stained glass windows.  I’m always, always really excited by these $10L skyboxes from A:S:S:.  If you aren’t in their subscribo, run and join.  I think you have to be in for 30 days before you can purchase the monthly $10L skybox.

A:S:S: Sultan Skybox

I should note that this skybox is available for purchase even if you aren’t in the subscribo.  Not sure of the price.

So there’s my green challenge and the evolution thereof.  Oh, and happy new year all. 🙂

Mad Props Challenge: Gift Box

I think Sookie’s challenge for the Mad Props Challenge this week makes perfect sense:  a gift box.  I don’t have a ton of time to say anything as it’s Christmas Eve and I have a few things to do, so here you go ….

As with the last post, I don’t have time to get detailed re: credits.  So … dress is Wretched Dollies, boots are Drakke and hair is I Love Olive.  I could talk about the rest, but you can’t see it, so …..  Merry Christmas everyone!

Color Challenge: Yellow

As we know, I detest yellow.  So there was no way anyone was getting a full blown yellow outfit out of me.  Once again, however, one of my favorite stores came to my rescue with a notice of a sale.  Blue Blood came up with a set of outfits for $25L and all were trimmed in yellow.  I chose the green because somehow it seemed the least offensive.  To make the color challenge a little more convincing, I wandered over to the Carnival of Carniverous Clowns – The Funhouse of Doom (where, incidentally, there’s a great dark Alice in Wonderland ride) and took some pics.  Here’s the result, heaven help me ….

Christmas Cookies

One of my favorite childhood Christmas memories is of making cookies with my Mother.  Mom didn’t bake much during the year, she was a school teacher with a busy life and, truth be told, not a great penchant for baking.  But at Christmas, we always made cookies.  And not just any cookies.  We always made ladyfingers.  Outside of our kitchen, I’ve never seen these cookies.  The recipe is almost exactly that of an Italian wedding cookie, but we shaped ours into long thin rolls before baking.  And we would always bake them, come hell or highwater.  Mom loves to tell the story of the Christmas when we came home from the midnight candlelight service at church and put our aprons on over our long dresses (hey, it was the ‘7o’s) and made ladyfingers until the wee hours.  Santa couldn’t come until there were ladyfingers to put on his plate.

I’m thinking about this today for two reasons.  First, I’ve had a horrible day with my 10 year old.  She is being a trying little soul, as 10 year old girls will be, and I’m trying to muster the will to find joy in our own Christmas traditions.  Second, and much less self-important, I found an adorable apron from Doppelganger at the Albero Holiday Dollar Fair.  It’s plaid and has candy canes and a sugar cookie sticking out of the pocket and it just so reminds me of what I used to wear in the kitchen with my Mom all those years ago.  So I dragged out my old baking table (no longer available in SL, I believe), plopped myself in a gorgeous skybox made my friend Shayne Karillion of Black Karbon, and pretended to bake the night away.  Sending sugar cookie filled dreams to all of you ….

Mad Props Challenge: Paintbrush

The second week in the Mad Props Challenge is the paintbrush.  I’ll admit to doing some painting RL and finding inspiration the hardest part.  I’ll have a strong desire to sit down and paint, but have difficulty settling on a subject.  Or I’ll have 27 ideas and have difficulty settling on one.  Or I’ll have one really good subject, but have trouble settling on how to paint it.  So I decided that the best way for me to use a paintbrush prop was to portray it in its almost natural habitat for me:  in my mouth as I reflect.  Normally, I would sip a cup of tea during this process.  In SL, however, I can relax in one.

The Mad Props Challenge: Umbrella

I’m liking this blogger challenge thing, so I’ve decided to take on another:  The Mad Props Challenge issued here by Sookie Slafford.  I’m behind on it (surprise), but here’s the first week:  umbrella.  I loved messing around with this one.  Out of my inventory, I plucked a vintage bathing suit, which came with it’s own matching umbrella, from [soap], pulled out a cloud prop from Baffle, went 500m  up into the air ….

Mad Props Challenge: Umbrella

Do you think the umbrella would slow my fall?  Mary Poppins style, perhaps.

I could give you all the credits, but I’m tired.  If you need to know where something came from, give me a shout. 🙂

Color Challenge: Sepia

It seems as if the SL gods are being kind to me in sending me just the right notice at just the right time for these color challenges.  I have the most insane three weeks coming up (ok, you probably do, too, but this is my blog so I get to whine), so I wanted to get this week’s color challenge under my belt sooner rather than later.  Logging into SL yesterday brought me a notecard from Pink Outfitters noting a new release:  the Hadley skirt.  I fell in love with it immediately and ventured out to PO as soon as I could this morning to pick it up.  The ad from PO showed it in navy and I thought it had a really nautical feel.  Fortunately for me, they also carry it in a very sepia like tone!  And at just $150L, I thought it was a steal.  Remembering that the Garden of Dreams sim has a very sepia vibe to it, I ventured over there for a couple of shots:

I chose the pose (from [doll.]) in the second picture specifically to show off the Bij Ring from Lazy Places.  It looks like a bee landing on a honeycomb and is absolutely adorable.  I don’t know if this particular ring is currently available in the shop, but they have other super cute things and are running a 50% off basement sale.  Here are the rest of the credits:

Color Challenge: Plum

I’m pretty late with this week’s color challenge, but I have really super good excuses, of course.  First, I’ve spent most of the week buried under my Christmas list.  Second, I found myself with very little plum in my wardrobe and not a lot of inspiration to go buy any.  Until this morning.  I got a Taste of SL notecard when I logged in this morning.  I immediately fell in love with the outfit from Indi Designs.  I’m not blogging that; you’ll have to check it out for yourself. :p  But wandering over there, I found this:

Mooning Santa at Indi Designs
Mooning Santa at Indi Designs

Hilarious, right?  While I know that it would scar children for life, I had to reward this beauty with more than just my ToSL purchase.  So I began hunting in the store for something plum that I could not only blog, but stand in my wardrobe.  I really like the quality of the things I find at Indi Designs generally, so I didn’t think this would be too much of a risk for me.  It absolutely wasn’t.  I found this beauty:

Winona Outfit with De Luca half boots in plum from Indi Designs

This gorgeous outfit comes in several layers and options, with both plum shirts and white; brown and plum jackets; long and short pants; brown and plum tights; and collars, belts, and cuffs with resize scripts and not.  The boots come in many colors and 3 different height options.  These are the medium height and all three offer resize option.  I should note that I didn’t have to resize anything.  And I will definitely be wearing this fabulous thing again.

This skybox is from Saturnine Dreams (Daydreams Skybox) and the bench is the Spare Bench (abc) from [North West].  The rug comes with the skybox.  Pose used:  Julia 03 from [doll.].

Harry!

One of my favorite places to visit, much less buy anything, in SL is Grim Bros.  I have tons of dresses, shoes, and toys from there, but my absolute favorite thing ever is my Harry:

Harry keeping watch at home.

If you’ve been to Grim, you’ve no doubt seen Harry’s friends and family, in various forms, keeping watch there, as well.  I have no idea what the Grim people call their eyeballs (besides the official, “cutea’s blinking eyeball tracker”), but I dubbed mine Harry almost as soon as he came to live with me about 11 months ago now.  He has lived indoors and out and has been my one constant companion, moving to watch where I, or any of my visitors, go at all times.

While my original Harry is ever with me, at Halloween, I had to have the batty version to grace my dead land ….

epsilons batty eyeball, available at Grim Bros.

This one’s tons of fun because he flies and flips and turns while he’s watching you.

When this Christmas season came, my daughter insisted that we either put a Santa hat on Harry, or find him a Christmas friend.  A quick wander over to Grim found me adopting Santa Harry ….

cutea's mod xmas red blinking eyeball tracker, available at Grim Bros.

To my fantastic delight (but not great surprise, in the end), I found other great eyes when I visited the pretrovsky flux.  Hosted at the Spencer Museum of Art in SL, it’s a creation of blotto Epsilon + Cutea Benelli.  Blotto is the creator of my Harry, as I understand it, and Cutea *is* Grim Bros.  First, you must go see this amazing thing.  I could sit for hours and watch it.  It self-creates and self-destructs as you sit and watch.  Grab an nc when you arrive.  Prior to, you can read about it (and see a great pic of the creators) here:  http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2010/11/sl-petrovsky-flux.html.  Second, well …  Harry!

Helicopter Harry at the petrovsky flux, Spencer Museum of Art, Second Life.

Please click on that last pic and blow it up.  In the background, you can see a piece of the structure flying around.  Very cool.

The last thing I’ll say about Harry is that he’s an eyeball who cares.  Proceeds from the sale of Harry and his friends (and a couple of other items) benefit Nothing But Nets, an organization which helps fight malaria in Africa.  So there really is no reason at all for you to not own your own Harry … or 3.

Turkey Day!

And just for you, the obligatory Thanksgiving Post.  You have one more day to stop by the ThanksGIVING Community Food Market in SL.  Several vendors have put fun, silly, and even a few useful items here all in an effort to raise money for The World Food Programme.  I’ve picked up a few fun things over the past few weeks, like a great sushi ring from Tasty (no pic … go see it yourself :p) and this fabulous ride on turkey from Thistle Homes!

Riding the turkey at Lost in Heaven

You can’t tell from the pic, but the turkey actually floats in a bit of circle as you sit on it.  The sign has 10 fun sayings; this one is my fave:

Hanging out with Sam the Walrus at home

Like the coffee mug I posted about yesterday, the turkey is its own little AO, maintaining through tps, so one may ride it all over the grid without fail, which I, of course, plan to do at least all day today and maybe for days to come.  I mean, seriously, how could I resist?

I hope you have a fantastic Thanksgiving, to all of you in the States.  To everyone else, just have a plain ol’ good day.  I’m off to see if my hocks are falling apart enough yet to put my greens in.  If you don’t know what that means, it’s ok, you just clearly haven’t had the pleasure of a good Southern meal. 🙂

Morning coffee

Ages ago, I picked up a free coffee mug at Cleo Designs.  If you do hunts, you’ll know this place, and my guess is that I picked this mug up during a hunt, though I honestly can’t remember.  So what, you may say, it’s a coffee mug!  This, my friend, is a special mug:  it has it’s own simple little AO that keeps one hovering above the ground, indian style (or criss cross applesauce as my children now say).  It maintains through tps, flying, etc.  I love this mug and have been unable to make myself take it off for a day or so now.  This morning, I decided to visit the horses at Mirromere while I had my morning coffee, rl and sl.

The gentleman in the foreground is my new friend, Laenopsis Gavilan, who wandered through as I was playing with windlight.  He is French and my French is horrid.  Fortunately, his English is a little better and we were able to at least exchange pleasantries.  Laenopsis is two weeks old.  I’m glad he’s already found this beautiful place and hope that you will explore it, too.  There are other areas on the sim besides this, including the Misty Mountains and all are worth some time.

I’ve spent a couple of days in this outfit, too, wandering the grid like a slobbish genie sipping coffee.  Don’t I look comfy?  I think the stress of this week, with all of the Thanksgiving festivities and the children home for five days, leaves me unable to even put my av in anything constricting.  Comfort is definitely the order of the (holi)day.

Shepard Fairey Gallery

If you don’t know who Shepard Fairey is, it’s about time you found out.  Fairey came into mainstream attention during the last presidential campaign, during which he essentially campaigned for Obama with his pasters, most notably the Obama “HOPE” Poster.  Prior to that, he was mostly known for his OBEY Campaign (see http://obeygiant.com/).  Classified as a street artist, Fairey’s work tends toward social education and justice.

Fortunately for us, there’s a Shepard Fairey exhibit in SL at the Albert Docks Art Gallery (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Jeogori/99/37/102).  Here are a couple of samples from the gallery:

When you get some time, I hope you’ll wander over to the Gallery and check out the exhibit.  And I also hope you’ll take some time to visit Fairey’s website and read his manifesto.  You may like him, you may hate him, but he’s worth giving a shot.

Color Challenge: Goldenrod

I hate yellow.  I mean, I seriously detest yellow in any form.  So goldenrod was so not happening for me as I trash anything yellow that might accidentally end up in my inventory like, say, from a hunt.  And yet here I am with the impossible task of doing goldenrod in this week’s color challenge!  What’s a girl to do?  Call on a friend, of course.  My fabulous friend Meghan came to my rescue ….

Color Challenge: Gray

Not much to say except that I’m fulfilling the gray color challenge with a nice, cozy winter outfit.  And warming my hands outside my cabin.

The outfit, boots included, is from ViGo Creations and the textures are really nice.  The only piece I’m not wearing is a mask.  Skin is Rockberry Uma with an AtomicBambi lipstick tat and hair is from Magika.

Color Challenge: Blue

OK, I’m joining the color challenge bandwagon.  And, surprise, I’m doing them out of order.  This is week #2 … blue.  I’ll do gray next.  And then, ack, goldenrod.  I say, “ack” because I hate yellow, but there ya go.

So here’s my blue … credits to follow.

The dress is called, “Factory Girl” and is from an unfortunately now defunct store called Sprawl.  You can still buy the clothes, hair, accessories, and even things like mailboxes and bus stop signs in archive packs here:  http://slurl.com/secondlife/Downtown/98/88/25.  Ages ago, I blew a fortune and bought the whole shebang and am really glad I did.  I will totally admit that I have trashed a good bit as the textures, etc. are old.  But it was completely worth it, as I think this dress, with socks included, proves.

The photo was taken at the TonkTastic store.  It’s a great urban build and worth checking out even if you don’t need combat gear.

Enchanted

OK, I don’t expect anyone to read this, but I’m posting for the sake of posting and because I wanted to take some fun pictures.  Dragging me back in is a beautiful new sim, Enchanted of Elven Realm (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Elven%20Realm/206/89/23).  I had seen some notices that it was having it’s grand opening this weekend and then saw a lovely post about it on the Studio Sidhe blog.  Faery Sola of Studio Sidhe made a unicorn prop pose for the grand opening and I had to buy it.

The Unicorn Multi-Pose Prop by Studio Sidhe. Photo taken at home.

The sim, itself, has several beautiful unicorns scattered throughout and a fun little unicorn “quest” which Meghan and I did.

In fact, there are apparently several quests, including a dragon one, which I hope to go back and do.  The dragon is fierce, indeed, though it’s fun that you can sit underneath him on a cupcake.  I ventured quite close ….

As I wandered around the sim, I saw several fairies and indications that it was made for us, or at least those of us who pretend to be one every now and then.

There is so much more to see at Enchanted.  Just flying around I spied an elk, a mermaid, a church, and a lovely rainbow.  There’s also a little shopping area right near the landing point and some of the proceeds benefit the Friends of Animals Fund.  I picked up this beautiful dress from Evie’s Closet for $50L and I believe 100% of the proceeds go to the charity.
